| Description: | BRYAN INGHAM (1936-1997) ‘Still life (Trelagnithack) ’ signed, titled & dated 1970-81, artists proof 1\12
etching - 38 x 26.5cm (sheet) Painter, sculptor, collagist & etcher, born George Bryan Ingham in Preston, Lancashire. He studied at St. Martin’s School of Art 1957-61, with Frederick Gore and Archibald Ziegler, then Royal College of Art in London, 1961-64, under Carel Weight, with a stay at the British Academy, Rome 1966. Ingham’s work engages with the crucial period of Cubism from 1912-1916 and the work of Picasso, Braque and Gris in particular. However, his interests and inspirations are diverse and include the work of Kurt Schwitters, Robert Rauschenburg, Georgio Morandi & even Piero della Francesca. The Arts Council, Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, Victoria & Albert Museum and many other public collections in Britain and abroad hold Inghams work. Ingham was a prodigiously talented and hardworking artist who’s output followed on from the early Cubists. For 25 years he lived at Jollytown, a remote and primitive cottage on the Lizard, Cornwall, with sustained periods in Germany. His wife, Ada (or Aysel) Ingham was a novelist, short story writer and poet whose books included The English Dream, 1990, the cover illustration a painting by Bryan. His work is reminiscent of Ben Nicholson in terms of both subject matter and treatment. Ingham died in 1997. |
